IFTA AND OTHER MOTOR CARRIER
TAX LICENSES AND PERMITS

The International Fuel Tax Agreement or "IFTA" is an agreement that has been made by each state which assesses motor fuel taxes. All states now belong to IFTA.

At the fuel pumps a motor fuel tax is added to the price of fuel. Each State has it's own tax rate. Some rates are very low, while other states fuel taxes are quite high. This is what causes much of the difference in the prices of fuel at the pumps.

All Interstate Carriers must register with their base juridiction to join this system. You will be issued an account number and receive a license and decals for your truck.

The benefits to the Interstate Carrier are listed below .
(if there ever can be a benefit to paying taxes)

Benefit #1) A single fuel tax license..as opposed to 48 separate licenses.

Benefit #2) A single tax report, at the end of each quarter.This report will detail
your operation in each juridiction and (when summarized) produces a
net amount representing the amount due to be paid or the amount of
refund that may be requested..as opposed to 48 tax returns every quarter.
